Dr. Carney completed his medical degree (M.D.) from Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, Nebraska, in 1981. He then completed a general surgery internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Pontiac, Michigan, in 1982. Dr. Carney did his residency in orthopedic surgery at McLaren General Hospital in Flint, Michigan, from 1982 – 1986.
