What Is Outpatient Surgery?

Outpatient surgery means that a patient will have surgery and be discharged from the surgery center on the same day. And while we understand that same-day surgery can be stressful for both patient and family, Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Outpatient Surgical Services have a comprehensive system designed exclusively for meeting those needs.

When You Arrive

Upon arrival, our friendly, knowledgeable Admissions staff will assist you with checking in, insurance and payment needs and answer any questions you may have about our services. And because your privacy is very important to us, all of your personal information will be protected under HIPAA guidelines.

Family And Friends

It is very important that you have an adult family member or friend with you as you prepare for surgery and to drive you home after surgery. At Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, we value your family and friends and have recently updated our facilities to better accommodate them at every stage of outpatient care.

Preparing For Surgery

After completing the admissions process, a member of your surgery team will escort you to the pre-operative area to prepare you for surgery. Your family or friend is welcome to be with you at this time as we collect all of your medical information and history, and answer all of your questions regarding your same-day surgery.

Surgery

The operating room (OR) provides a safe and sterile place for your surgery. Prior to going to the OR you will see the Anesthesiologist and review the type of anesthesia you will receive. Our Anesthesiologists are trained to provide a personalized anesthesia regimen.

After Surgery

After surgery, you will be taken to our newly renovated recovery room, designed to accommodate more family and friends. A Registered Nurse will watch you closely until the anesthesia wears off and you are alert, at which time your family/friend will be able to visit you in recovery. Your nurse will stay by your side in order to fill you in on all of the important details before you are discharged.

Going Home

When your same-day surgical team determines you are ready for discharge, they will assist you and your family through the simplified discharge process after which you will be taken to the car by wheelchair, guided by one of our caring staff members.

Follow Up

You will be receiving a follow-up call from a member of the Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Total Healthcare Team. They will check your progress and answer any additional questions you may have.
